Lies
What lies do you find yourself believing today? Do you find it’s hard to even know the difference between the truth and a lie sometimes? We must always consider the source. Sometimes the lies are coming from your own thoughts.
Think about what words you might be hearing inside your head sometimes: “I’ll never be good enough. I don’t have as much ability as that person. I always mess up. Nobody cares about me. Everyone else is in a better situation than I am.”
Those are not thoughts that God has placed upon your heart; in fact, those are the lies of the enemy. Satan is the Prince of Lies, and he takes no greater joy than in distorting the truth and making you feel like less than you truly are. “Unkind and condemning thoughts tell me that God’s love is distant, cold, or irrelevant, that I must prove myself to God and other people, that I am orphaned and unlovable, that God is tapping His toe, impatient with me, ready to walk out on me.” (59)
Our world today tries to create feelings of insecurity and worthlessness within us, and in too many ways, it’s succeeding! “New data from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics [as of April, 2025] indicate that the prevalence of depression in U.S. adolescents and adults increased 60% in the past decade, according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).” (cdc.gov) The world does not nurture us or encourage us, and society’s unrelenting pressure to achieve more, look better, and buy bigger wears on us. It’s simply never enough, no matter what we try to do!
Isaiah 43: 1-3a tells us in no uncertain terms how God feels about us:
“But now, this is what the Lord says—
He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
If we had no value or worth, why on earth would God redeem us, claim us, and protect us? Our value as human beings comes not from the things we do, the jobs we hold, the places we go, or the things we possess: it comes simply and completely from our identity as God’s favorite creations, made in His own likeness. Rest in that promise today and stop believing any of the lies that try to invade your heart and existence. Treasure the words of this passage and let it remind you of how valuable and precious you are to the King of the universe.
