About

I’m Heather

Hello,

I have been married to my best friend, Mitch, for 27 years–crazy to think about being married that long! Together we have raised three adventurous, fun-loving, and compassionate young men. While we don’t get much time together as a family now that the boys are grown, we cherish the moments that we do share together. Some of the things that we enjoy doing as a family are playing games, sitting around a fire, going for hikes, making sugar cookies, and preparing food together.

When I find a quiet moment for myself, my choices are diverse. If I am having a rough day I prefer to go for a run or a prayer walk to clear my chaotic mind. On cooler days, I like to sew or just chill with a good book (WWII historical fiction is my favorite) and a cup of coffee (or diet coke) is always good.

Baking is one of my favorite pastimes. Close friends have accused me of baking my way into the heart of people–I am ok with that accusation, because it may be true! I enjoy exploring new recipes and modifying them to become my own.  The only part I do not like about baking is having to clean up the messes that I make! I have been known to bribe a child or two with fresh baked chocolate chip cookies if they will do the dishes (there is no shame in asking for help).

Asking for help is something that used to be difficult for me.

I learned at an incredibly young age that if I was going to survive, I would need to figure things out for myself. I grew up in a godless home where my needs often went unmet unless I took control of the situation. While the skills I learned helped me to survive when I was a child, these same skills would later become stumbling blocks in my relationships with others and more importantly, with Christ. Unlearning these “survival skills” continues to be a part of my daily routine. While change has been difficult at times, with God it has become possible.

I am married to an amazing Campus Minister who served God faithfully at Ferris State University for 25 years until Covid caused some long-term health problems that made it impossible for Mitch to serve in the same capacity as before. He still serves with His House Christian Fellowship but in a much different role and on a very limited part-time basis. So, our family is adjusting to these changes and learning to live and serve in new ways. The changes that we have been forced to make have been challenging, but I am no stranger to obstacles.

Obstacles have been present in my life for as long as I can remember. I did not grow up in a Christian home. I am a survivor of physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse. I ran away from home for the first time at age 14 and then left for good at 15 years of age. I am a woman who rented her first apartment at age 16 and worked two part-time jobs to get through high school and then later worked my way through college. I have been suicidal more than once in my life and have spent countless hours in Christian counseling to gain an understanding of the goodness of God and why He allows bad things to happen.

Why do I share these things with you?

Because God has redeemed me and my broken past and out of these ashes, He is making something beautiful. We do not have to be perfect to be used by God. In fact, scripture tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness! Praise God because we all have moments of weakness that need to be redeemed by our Creator.

My life has not been perfect. If I were to guess, I would say your life hasn’t been perfect either—and that is ok. Philippians 3:12 reminds us that we are still in the process of being perfected because Christ Jesus has made us His own! If you are looking for someone to cheer you on, be your biggest fan, provide accountability and encouragement as you strive to live for and like Christ, then get in touch with me and learn how to get started with transformational coaching today.
